Creative Notes: Book Reviews

I enjoyed reading the recent BOOK REVIEWS in Time Of Singing, A Journal Of Christian Poetry (Volume 46, “Intermezzo,” Fall 2019). Lora Homan Zill is editor.

Inspired by the reviews, I ordered a few books.

Two examples are:

Lanterns by Lorraine Joy McLeod. Published by Xlibris, 2018. Reviewed by Elizabeth Howard.

What Cannot Be Fixed by Jill Peláez Baumgaertner. The Poiema Poetry Series. Cascade Books, an imprint of Wipf and Stock, 2014. Reviewed by Lora Homan Zill.

I also reread books by poets I have read for years and years. Luci Shaw is an example. And every week, I enjoy poems by many poets through our blogs. Poetry goes with me wherever I go, and sometimes is simply stored in my heart. Thank you.

CHRISTIAN PUBLISHING 101: The comprehensive guide to writing well and publishing successfully – for new authors, editors, and students. ANN BYLE, Foreword by Jocelyn Green. Credo House Publishers, Grand Rapids Michigan. Copyright 2018 by Ann Byle.

I learned about CHRISTIAN PUBLISHING 101 from the Time Of Singing site. Editor Lora Homan Zill’s chapter in the book is “The Heart of a Poet: Writing to Challenge Readers.”

Just beginning to read this book.

On a related note, Time Of Singing, A Journal Of Christian Poetry is now publishing Volume 46. I have subscribed for years. TOS is currently published four times a year by Wind & Water Press (Conneaut Lake, PA).

I also bought the new edition of WALKING ON WATER: Reflections on Faith and Art, by Madeleine L’Engle. Preface by Sara Zarr and Reader’s Guide by Lindsay Lackey. Convergent Books, New York. Madeleine’s book was first published in 1980 by Harold Shaw Publishers. An important book for me, over the years.

Creative Notes

A quiet and grey morning here.  I am listening to Peace in the Puzzle, solo harp instrumentals, by Amy Shreve, and praying the Psalms.

The Fall 2018 Time Of Singing (TOS) arrived recently.  Lora Homan Zill is Editor.  She suggests that if we are looking for Christmas gift ideas, a subscription to TOS is an idea to consider.

We are beginning work on a second large print chapbook, in the same style as Quiet Christmas Poetry.  Copies of the Christmas book can be ordered from the Time Of Singing books page.

The theme of the new book is Wisconsin Seasons and Encouragement.  My haiku, “birds perch,” seems to belong in the new book.

Today I am reading Time Of Singing: A Journal Of Christian Poetry (Volume 44, Number 3; Winter 2017/18).  Lora Homan Zill is Editor.  Violet Nesdoly is the Contributing Editor for this issue.
